15,000 documents from Italian into English in 3 days

Mamma Mia!

THE CHALLENGE
One of our large corporate clients had to close the acquisition of an Italian company in less than a week. (we’re used to dealing with shorter deadlines)

THE TASK
One Planet was hired to translate 15 thousand Italian receipts and invoices in order to complete the corporate client’s due diligence process. As soon as the documents arrived at our home office, in Pittsburgh, they were immediately scanned and e-mailed to our team of Italian translators. (an all nighter and plenty of espresso)

THE SNAG
Many of the invoices were written in several Italian dialects ranging from Bergamasco to Venetian. (which we fully anticipated)

THE SOLUTION
Our project manager took advantage of our extensive translation resources located throughout Italy. Working closely with our client’s lawyers and accountants, we developed a three-stage translation database until all documents were accounted for and classified. (badda boom! badda bing!)

THE BOTTOM LINE
One Planet’s “can do attitude”, customized translation process and technical assistance allowed our client to meet their deadline and to close their acquisition on time! (bellissimo!)

Localizing presents most unexpected challenges in typography

Right to the letter!
THE CHALLENGE
A global leader in hydraulic cranes needed Polish translations of their machinery labels. (not a stretch)
THE TASK
In order to ship their machinery to Poland, our client needed fully localized decals and safety labels. (so far so good)
THE SNAG
The software application used to create the English decals (Adobe PageMaker’s subprogram “Tables”) did not support Unicode type fonts, accepting only the first 256 characters of any font, and separating diacritical marks from their base characters. (proving that all labels aren’t created equal)
THE SOLUTION
The differences in character display were minute, and may have gone unnoticed by a non-native speaker. But because of our ISO 2000-based methodology, where quality control checks occur at each phase in the process, our team immediately identified the problem and began to develop a solution.
While the easiest method would have been re-creating the labels in another application, we were acutely aware that our customers needed to preserve their files for future updates. Our Desktop Publishing department utilized their knowledge of character mapping and font creation to re-engineer the font.
(we never take shortcuts, as they can be the path to losing a client)
THE BOTTOM LINE
Our experience with character processing techniques means that our customers can rely on One Planet to customize typography for any project in any language.
(right on the mark, every time!)
